From Fixer to Healer: A Journey of Transformation
The wounded healer's journey...

| Can we fix it? |
The journey from fixer to healer is a profound one, marked by shifts in perspective, motivation, and ultimately, impact. It's a transition I've experienced personally, and one that I believe holds immense value for anyone seeking to cultivate deeper, more fulfilling relationships.
The Fixer's Mindset
For many years, I operated primarily in fixer mode. My military background, coupled with a deep-seated need for control, fueled a desire to solve problems, alleviate discomfort, and restore order. This manifested in my personal relationships as well. I often found myself taking on the role of the rescuer, attempting to "fix" those I cared about, often to my own detriment.
This fixer mentality, while seemingly helpful, can be limiting. It often stems from a place of discomfort with vulnerability, both in ourselves and others. We may try to bypass the messy, uncomfortable process of emotional exploration and jump straight to solutions. This can inadvertently disempower others, preventing them from developing their own resilience and perpetuating unhealthy dependencies.
Recognizing the Wounded Healer
The transition from fixer to healer often begins with recognizing the wounded healer within. For me, this involved confronting my own unresolved pain, my need for control, and my discomfort with vulnerability. It required a willingness to delve into the shadows of my own psyche and acknowledge the ways in which my fixer tendencies were driven by my own unmet needs.
This process of self-discovery can be challenging, but it's also incredibly liberating. As we become more aware of our own wounds, we develop greater compassion for ourselves and others. We begin to understand that true healing isn't about fixing or controlling, but about creating a space for genuine connection, vulnerability, and growth.
Embracing the Healer's Path
The healer's path is one of empathy, empowerment, and deep listening. It's about recognizing the inherent wholeness within each individual and supporting their journey toward self-discovery and healing. It's about fostering a space where vulnerability is honored, pain is acknowledged, and transformation is nurtured.
This shift from fixer to healer requires a willingness to surrender our need for control, to embrace uncertainty, and to trust in the innate wisdom within each person. It involves cultivating qualities such as:
- Deep Listening: Truly hearing and understanding the other person's experience without judgment.
- Empathy: Connecting with their emotions and seeing the world from their perspective.
- Patience: Allowing the healing process to unfold at its own pace, without rushing or forcing solutions.
- Empowerment: Supporting their autonomy and encouraging them to discover their own strength and wisdom.
- Boundaries: Maintaining healthy boundaries to avoid enmeshment and ensure both individuals' well-being.
The Healer's Impact
The impact of a healer is profound and far-reaching. By fostering a space for authentic connection and deep listening, healers empower individuals to:
- Connect with their inner wisdom: Discover their own truths and access their innate resilience.
- Cultivate self-compassion: Embrace their imperfections and release self-judgment.
- Heal from past wounds: Process and integrate their experiences, transforming pain into wisdom.
- Embrace their authentic selves: Live in alignment with their values and express their truth with courage and compassion.
- Create more fulfilling relationships: Connect with others on a deeper level, fostering mutual growth and support.
The Journey Continues
The journey from fixer to healer is an ongoing process, a continuous evolution of self-awareness, compassion, and empowerment. It's a path that aligns with my core values of love, loving-kindness, and truth, and my belief that we are all inherently capable of healing and transformation.
As I continue on this journey, I'm reminded of the words of the mystic poet Rumi: "The wound is the place where the Light enters you." It's through our wounds, our vulnerabilities, and our willingness to embrace the messy, imperfect process of healing that we discover our greatest strength and wisdom.
In the context of my own ministry:
My evolution from fixer to healer has profoundly shaped my approach to ministry. I no longer seek to provide all the answers or "fix" people's problems. Instead, I strive to create a space where individuals feel safe to explore their own spiritual journey, connect with their inner wisdom, and discover their own unique path to wholeness. I believe that everyone possesses the innate capacity for healing and transformation, and my role is to gently guide and support them on their journey.
This approach aligns with my belief in divine sonship, our inherent worthiness as children of God, and our power to co-create our reality. It's about empowering individuals to claim their birthright as beloved children of the universe, capable of manifesting their dreams and living a life filled with purpose, joy, and love.
By embracing the healer within, we not only transform our own lives but also contribute to the healing and transformation of the world around us. We become beacons of love, compassion, and empowerment, inspiring others to embark on their own journey of self-discovery and wholeness.
