The "Family Duty" Trap: How We Silence Our Inner Spark

Let's create a world where our work is an expression of our souls, not a denial of them...

Sisyphus at the Office

We all have passions. Those things that light us up, make time disappear, and leave us feeling truly alive. Yet, how often do we shove those passions aside? We tell ourselves, "It's not a real job," or "I could never make a living doing that." We prioritize "practicality" and end up with a life that feels anything but.

This happened to someone I knew. A gifted artist, incredibly talented, sought-after for his unique style. He could've built a thriving career, but instead, he chose a soul-crushing office job. Why? Because deep down, he believed that "real work" meant struggle and sacrifice, not joy and fulfillment. And more than that, the identity of "artist," of someone who followed their passion, just didn't feel safe. It felt unstable, unpredictable, maybe even shameful in some way. So he opted for the perceived safety and respectability of a conventional career, even though it suffocated his soul.

His parents, both high-achieving professionals, had instilled this belief. Their work was demanding, stressful, done out of a sense of duty and "providing for the family." Coming home exhausted and needing support, they inadvertently taught him that work was about obligation, not passion. They taught him that true security lay in conformity, in following the well-trodden path, even if it led away from his heart's desire.

This is the "family duty" trap. We inherit subconscious beliefs about what work should be, often based on our parents' experiences. We equate passion with irresponsibility, with "not pulling your weight." We deny our true selves in the name of duty, in the name of security, in the name of fitting in.

But what about the "God spark" within us? That unique essence, that inner fire that drives our passions? When we silence that spark, we deny a part of who we are. We separate ourselves from the divine flow that wants to express itself through us. We choose the illusion of safety over the authenticity of our own being.

This denial comes at a cost. Burnout, resentment, a nagging sense of "what if?" We might achieve external success, but at what price? Our souls yearn for something more, something deeper. They yearn for the freedom to express our true selves, to embrace our passions, and to live a life that is aligned with our divine purpose.

So how do we break free from the "Family Duty" Trap?

It starts with awareness. Take an honest look at your beliefs about work. Where did those ideas come from? Did you absorb them from your parents, your teachers, or society at large? Do you truly believe that work has to be a struggle, a sacrifice, a means to an end? Or could it be something more, something that aligns with your passions and brings you joy? Question those inherited beliefs. Challenge the assumptions that are holding you back. If those beliefs aren't serving you, it's time to rewrite the script.

Challenge the Fear: That voice whispering "you can't" is often fear masquerading as reason. It tells you to play it safe, to stick with the familiar, to avoid taking risks. But what if you could pursue your passions? What if you could make a living doing what you love? Imagine the possibilities. Visualize yourself thriving, doing work that excites you, that makes you feel truly alive. Don't let fear dictate your choices. Step into the unknown, embrace the uncertainty, and trust that the universe will support you.

Embrace the "God spark" Within: Your passions are not random. They're a part of you, a divine gift, a reflection of your unique essence. They're signposts pointing you towards your true path. Honor them. Explore them. Give them space to breathe and grow. Don't dismiss them as frivolous or impractical. They are a part of your soul's purpose, waiting to be expressed.

Redefine Success. It's not just about money, status, or external validation. It's about alignment, about living a life that reflects your values and your passions. It's about finding work that brings you joy, that allows you to express your creativity, and that contributes to something larger than yourself. It's about living authentically, honouring your true self, and making a difference in the world.

Breaking free from the "family duty" trap is a journey of self-discovery. It's about shedding those limiting beliefs that tell us work has to be a struggle, a sacrifice, a means to an end. It's about recognizing that our passions—those things that light us up and make us feel truly alive—are not frivolous or impractical, but rather signposts pointing us towards our true path. It's about embracing those passions, even if it means taking risks and stepping outside our comfort zones, and creating a life that is truly our own. It might not be easy, but a life of passion is a life worth fighting for.

Let's create a world where our work is an expression of our souls, not a denial of them. A world where the "family duty" trap is replaced by the freedom to pursue our true calling.
